Genetic Informed Consent

How consent works, who signs, and what you are agreeing to.

This page explains the consent process. It is not the consent form. The consent that authorizes your test is signed on the laboratory's own paperwork, in the collection kit, at the time samples are taken. This page tells you in advance exactly what that form covers, so nothing is a surprise on the day.

Who signs

Every adult being tested signs for themselves. Consent signatures are required from all tested participants — for legal and informational tests. One person cannot consent on behalf of another adult, however close the relationship, and we cannot proceed until every adult on the case has signed.

A person under 18 can never consent for themselves. A parent or legal guardian authorizes the test and must be present at collection. The only exception is a legally emancipated minor.

What you are agreeing to

That a cheek swab may be taken from you; that the laboratory may extract and analyze DNA from it for the sole purpose of the relationship test named on your case; that a report of that result may be produced and released to the person who opened the case; and that the sample will be held until it is destroyed on the schedule in our Privacy Policy.

We test only the relationship you asked about. Your sample is not used for health testing, disease risk, ancestry or research, and it is not added to any database.

Changing your mind

You can withdraw before your samples reach the laboratory — call (678) 492-5201 and tell us. Once analysis has begun it cannot be stopped, and once a result exists it exists. What you are refunded depends on how far the case has gone; that is set out in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.

Who sees the result

Only the person who opened the case. Not a partner who referred you, not the collector who took your swab, not another participant unless the case holder shares it with them. If you are a participant rather than the case holder and you want your own copy, tell us before collection.

Identification, for legal tests

You show your photo ID in person to the collector, who is an unrelated, trained third party. They record that they have seen it and sign alongside you. Nothing is sent to us and we do not keep a copy of your ID. Minors are not required to present photo identification.

Before you commit

If any part of this is unclear, call before you book. A five-minute conversation costs nothing and settles most of it — and if the people available for testing are unlikely to give you a clear answer, we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid.
